The Art of Possible ๐ฎ๐
Hi Friends ๐,
Extending on our previous episode on gaming, I want to explore how gaming and novels inspire today's innovations. Let's dive into some fascinating possibilities that might shape our future. ๐ As you might have heard, imaginative works like "Snow Crash" have inspired groundbreaking ideas like the metaverse. We are going to delve into three intriguing scenarios that I โcrowdsourcedโ from different books/ articles I read and believe could revolutionize our world.
Scenario 1: Human beings equipped with sense to detect echoes and electric fields
We humans are so accustomed to our five senses that much of our experience is fundamentally driven by them. For example, we pay for gourmet cuisines to fulfill our taste. But what if we could enhance our senses inspired by animals?
Imagine navigating and hunting in the dark using biosonar (echolocation), like bats๐ฆ and dolphins๐ฆ! This could allow us to detect our surroundings through sound echoes. ๐ It would revolutionize how we explore and interact with the world at night, making night-time navigation safer and more intuitive. For instance, visually impaired individuals could gain a new way to sense their environment, increasing their independence and mobility. ๐
Or consider electroreception๐โthe ability to detect electric fields, which sharks and platypuses use to locate prey when visibility is low. ๐พ This could enrich human experience by enabling us to sense our environment in new ways. Imagine firefighters detecting human presence through electrical signals in smoke-filled rooms, or divers locating underwater hazards or marine life in murky waters. This new sense could enhance safety and efficiency in various critical scenarios. ๐๐
I would like to add an additional philosophical lens to view this. Meet Husserl, a philosopher who came up with something called phenomenology. Imagine you're the star of your own video game, and the entire game is about your experiences. That's essentially what phenomenology isโstudying how we experience the world from our own point of view. ๐ง
If we could augment our existing five senses with additional ones, this could profoundly enrich our phenomenological experience. It would allow us to perceive the world in ways currently unimaginable, adding layers of depth and complexity to our interactions with our environment. No longer would we only see, taste, hear, touch, and smell; we might also feel electric fields, detect objects with sonar, and so on. ๐
Scenario 2: Energy Certificates Instead of US Dollar as Global Currency ๐ก๐ต
The US dollar, backed by the powerful US economy, is the predominant global exchange currency. However, before 1944 and the Bretton Woods Agreements, gold was the universal measure of value. The USD's dominance facilitated global trade but introduced challenges, such as susceptibility to US economic and political fluctuations. The 2008 financial crisis, rooted in the US housing market collapse, highlighted these vulnerabilities and underscored the need for a more stable global monetary system not controlled by a single nation.
Enter Howard Scott's innovative proposal - in his article โTechnology Smashes the Price Systemโ, Scott proposed using energy units such as ergs, joules, or calories as a global currency. Scott, known for his engineering mindset in addressing social issues, argued that energy units offer a more stable and equitable basis for value. Unlike the fluctuating purchasing power of the USD, the intrinsic value of energy units remains constant. For example, the value of one dollar varied significantly between 1929 and 1933, but the value of an equivalent amount of energy did not change. ๐
Scott's vision involves redesigning the global monetary system to reflect a country's net energy budget. This approach could ensure that the total amount of currency corresponds to the energy produced and consumed, promoting a fair distribution of material wealth. By aligning currency with energy output, Scott believes we could eliminate unemployment, debt, and social injustice. This system would distribute the benefits of energy production evenly, ensuring that everyone receives their fair share of the material wealth generated.
Why Energy Certificates could be a More Accurate Indication of Productivity:
If we reconsider the issue from an engineering point of view, both production and economics fundamentally aim to produce sufficient "energy" for human consumption, whether in the form of food or daily usage like electricity. Energy generation provides a more accurate indication of a nation's actual productivity compared to money. Unlike monetary values, which can be manipulated through policies like quantitative easing, energy units represent a more stable and consistent measure of value. Therefore, transitioning to energy certificates could stabilize economies, promote fairness, and foster a more equitable and resilient global economy.
Scenario 3: Gratitude Day ๐โค๏ธ
Among the various imaginative scenarios discussed, Gratitude Day might be the most actionable, especially given the growing popularity of the idea of Universal Basic Income. Imagine waking up one morning to find that it's Gratitude Dayโa national holiday where the government gifts you $2,000. The twist? You get to keep half and must give the other half to essential frontline workers. ๐
Eligible recipients include healthcare workers, teachers, public librarians, park employees, bus drivers, and farm workers. These are individuals who provide crucial services to our society yet often don't receive the recognition or compensation they deserve. By participating in Gratitude Day, you have the opportunity to honor these everyday heroes, whether it's the nurse who cared for your premature baby or the bus driver who ensures you get to work safely. ๐๐ฉโโ๏ธ
Imagine the positive impacts this could create! Strengthening social connections, fostering a culture of appreciation, and making low-paying but essential jobs more attractive are just a few potential benefits. Could this holiday be the key to improving social welfare and economic security? Would you choose to participate, and if so, who would you honor? ๐
However, it's also worth considering potential drawbacks. Could this system create dependency or be seen as a band-aid solution to deeper systemic issues? Would it be sustainable in the long run? These are important questions to ponder as we explore the possibilities of such an initiative. ๐
So, what do you think? Would you opt-in to participate in Gratitude Day? How might it change your perspective on essential workers and community support? ๐ง
Unlocking the Future: The Power of Imagination
We've explored three interesting scenarios (at least from my point of view). But we shouldn't stop exploring! That's why I'm planning to build a side project within the weekly digest to talk about intriguing possibilities that I come up with or "crowdsourced" from my day-to-day reading. ๐๐
In the age of generative AI, it's crucial to imagine different possibilities. AI can help us generate solutions at low cost and without the need for technical expertise, much like how GitHub Copilot assists new programmers. ๐จ๐ค
AI is taking over more of the mandatory and repetitive tasks, which means humans need to transition into more idea-creator roles. Technologies like generative AI, the metaverse, and digital twins allow us to experiment and test our potential solutions in much easier and low-cost settings. For example, it's now possible to create a gamified experience within the metaverse where people can try out the concept of Gratitude Day before the government even considers converting it into an actual policy in the real world. ๐๐ฎ
By leveraging these technologies, we can dry-run our ideas, see what works, and refine our concepts before they materialize. This transforms the way we innovate, allowing us to be more creative, efficient, and impactful. ๐โจ
So, let's embrace the art of the possible and continue to explore how imaginative works can inspire real-world innovations. Stay tuned for more exciting "what if" scenarios in the future! ๐โจ
Happy imagining! ๐ญ๐
